"See you in September; see you when the summer's through.".....The Tempos, 1959
Summer is over?Yes, I put that in the form of a question!A glance at the thermometer reminds us that summer in Florida lasts longer than three months.June, July and August had us all busy with vacation stuff, but now school is back in session and summer is officially over.Jane and I just returned from visiting family and friends in Pennsylvania and Virginia, and are ready to settle in to what passes for a more normal routine, and I am sure many of you are as well.
With September having arrived, we look forward to the resumption of those activities that went on hiatus back in May - Faith Formation/Sunday School, Wednesday night supper and study, Deacon classes and Choir practice, to name a few. This summer, thanks to a small but energetic group, the narthex, fellowship hall, and ladies rest room have all been refurbished. And the Mission Team is hard at work preparing not just a spending plan for 2011, but also some long-range plans through 2015.As you can see, despite the somewhat slower pace of the past three months, the work of the church goes on.In the tenth chapter of Luke Jesus tells his disciples "the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few."There's plenty to do around All Saints, and while things do manage to get done, there's always a need for more workers. If you haven't yet found your calling, now is a good time to step forward.
Every summer we tend to slack off in coming to worship, distractions of vacation time being what they are.If you remember the movie "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," you will recall that everyone was searching for treasure buried under THE BIG W.Pastor Rick and the Deacons (sounds like a good name for a doo-wop group!) have reminded us in their sermons the past few weeks of the fundamentals of PoWeR SuRGe, where THE BIG W encourages us to Worship Weekly. There are many places where we can Pray or Read scripture, and the opportunities to Serve, Relate to others, and Give are abundant. But the best place, by far, to Worship is in God's house on Sunday.
See you on Sunday, in September (and the other 11 months, too!), Jim
